3D printer employed for major architectural project
A collaboration between Thailand’s largest cement manufacturer and a one of the country’s major architectural companies is employing 3D technology to create the first 3D printed house in Asia.
The WASP project, between Siam Cement Group (SCG) and architect Pitupong Chaowakul (Supermachine Studio) was created off the back of SCG’s growing interest in the potential of 3D technology. The company stated: “We would like to drive the construction industry in Thailand, and 3D printing technology is one of the innovations that will get more involved in the construction and architecture.”
A year ago SCG contacted WASP and, after the first meeting, began a collaboration and WASP made a four metre high custom series printer able to print a 2x2x2m volume and to extrude thick fluid materials similar to the concrete produced by SCG.
Massimo Moretti of WASP added: "We are very proud that a big company like this believes in our work so much to come to Italy four times in a year, sharing its plans with us. They bridge the GAP of European organisations that are approaching 3D very slowly.”
The first project completed with this technology is ‘Helix: The Family Cocoon’, a small creative sleep-able shelter, that imitates the natural structure of the shell fusiform.
