In what may be the first ever case of using 3D printing in the restoration of artistic and cultural heritage, WASP has been asked to collaborate in restorative intervention by the Special Superintendence for Cultural Heritage of Pompei, Ercolano and Stabia. Two of the company's Delta 4070 3D printers have been supplied to reproduce 1:1 scale versions of the casts of citizens who perished following Vesuvius' eruption in 79AD.

Massimo Osanna, project manager, commented: “casts are the most sought after pieces for exhibition abroad.” However, they are too fragile to be safely transported, explaining the need for perfectly reproduced 3D printed copies. The first printed pieces will be sent to Canada in a few months and are expected to increase demand from all over the world.

Massimo Moretti, CEO, WASP, believes that this is a perfect example of how technology can be useful for cultural heritage. In Moretti’s opinion, we are at a decisive stage for 3D printing: "One of the most interesting areas is restoration, its use in art and culture. Pompei is an example of how the technology can be at the service of cultural heritage."
