Laser sources are widely used in the industry for labeling and material-machining applications. To meet the fast growing demands concerning precision and processing speed, optical scanner systems are applied for the modulation or deflection of light. Compared to mechanical translation stages optical scanner systems provide clear benefits regarding positioning accuracy and repeatability as well as very high dynamics.

Researchers have now developed an optical sensor for the windshield that can even tell the difference between fog and darkness. The system will also be available for small cars.

Fraunhofer IPM had extremely fast laser scanners on show at the INTERGEO 2010 trade fair in Cologne, Germany. These eye-safe high-tech systems can record more than one million measuring points per second, measuring their distances down to a millimeter if required by customers or the application.
